Overall, the results are encouraging. In the past decade, over 2.2 million anti-personnel mines, 250,000 anti-vehicle mines and 17 million other explosives left over from wars have been removed. But there is still a long way to go, especially in aiding landmine survivors:

In 1993, when Eugine Mussolini was fifteen-years-old, he stepped on a landmine while trying to join the RPF forces in Rwanda’s eastern province. Niger ratified the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) last week — that makes 8 States that have ratified so far! The CCM has the most comprehensive victim assistance provisions of any weapons-ban treaty to date. 30 States have to ratify before the treaty becomes legally binding… on the road there.
